Here is another portrait that I did for a friend that I worked with. He was another classic Left Bank server. There is something very immediate about a painted portrait. I think that Picasso was right when he said that his paintings were like fetishes. I think Lucien Freud ascribed this quality to his portraits as well. I believe he said that once he had painted someone he owned a piece of them. When I look at a painted portrait that immediacy of presence is the most captivating part of the painting. The colors, the light, the composition are all too tangible to be of true significance. What they indicate, that essential thing outside of the painting that is embodied in its parts is what is truly beautiful.
